What is the difference between Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease?

Many people wonder how Alzheimer’s Disease is related to Dementia. The short answer is Alzheimer’s Disease is a form of Dementia. Currently there are over 100 different forms of Dementia that have been identified in the medical community.

Alzheimer’s disease has sub types as well. When explaining dementia to others, we frequently see the Umbrella with the word Dementia and the various forms of dementia are listed under the cover of the umbrella. I like to use a different analogy when educating others on Dementia. To me, Dementia is the last name of a family with many children and generations.
