Teaching My Family Members

I started taking Karen’s class at Utah Tech so I could learn a bit more about the diagnosis my mom has: Vascular Dementia. I wanted to learn how I could help her more and what would happen as this sickness progressed. Karen’s class definitely opened my eyes to so many things. I definitely didn’t know. Now I’m teaching my brother and cousins so they can be aware of what we will be going through. I recommend these classes to anyone that is a caregiver or has anyone with dementia. I promise you, Karen will definitely open your eyes.

Listens and takes time

Karen takes time to listen and helps clients navigate the dementia journey. She can quickly assess and guide families in the best direction for their situation.  I highly recommend her to anyone who needs help with understanding the process of dementia and it’s impact to caregivers.

I wish I had done this sooner

I learned something in this class.  The information I learned could have helped me as I visited with my grandmother before she died.

Teepa Snow

Karen’s Journey

Karen Straw, is a seasoned professional with over 15 years of experience as a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP). Karen’s journey with dementia became more clear during her time as a memory care director. Frustrated by the minimal training available to care partners and the resulting hardships they faced, Karen recognized the urgent need for comprehensive education and support. Care providers were often injured, individuals with dementia acted confused and family members experienced their own frustration. After attending a conference where Teepa Snow was the speaker, she felt this was the approach to use. Teepa’s program, A Positive Approach to Care® put a framework around what she knew was needed to improve care. It wasn’t just about managing symptoms with medication; it was about providing individuals with dementia the opportunity to live fuller, better lives because their care providers understood what was happening and how to respond. Karen’s extensive qualifications make her an invaluable asset to DementiAgility. She is a Certified Dementia Practitioner®, and Certified Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care Trainer™ .  Karen is a Certified Independent Coach, Consultant, Trainer (future) and Champion Teacher with Positive Approach to Care®  (PAC™), a renowned organization specializing in dementia care training. Her certification with PAC ™ demonstrates her commitment to promoting positive and compassionate approaches to dementia care.
